piso antiguo

Merle woke me up yesterday morning with a text asking if I wanted to look at an apartment with her at 3:00. I said yes. We met at 2:30 to allow for plenty of time to wander through the windy narrow streets of El Casco and find the place. When we found it and entered it was kind of like going back in time and I fell in love with it almost immediately.

First there is a dark somewhat dusty entry room with a scooter tucked away in one corner. After that you enter a open courtyard with tons of plants and blue sky above. Three floors of apartments surround this little courtyard area. You walk up some uneven old concrete stairs to the uneven old concrete floor of the balcony/hallway where you can look at the courtyard through all the plants that are in the hallway and the clothes hanging up to dry everywhere. Her apartment is on the third floor, and looks like it was decorated 60 years ago and hasn´t been touched since.

The landlord was adamant that she doesn´t want a lot of traffic coming and going. It´s actually a 3 bdrm place, but she only wants 2 people living there for that reason. She views the whole place as sort of her home. Merle´s roommate Jessica has a friend who lives in Sevilla. He comes to vist her every other weekend, so they´re going to have to sneak him in, because the landlady told us that a while back some renters were having a bunch of people visiting and staying the night and she kicked them out. (That doesn´t really seem legal...but I guess maybe the rules are different with 65 year old Spanish landladys).

Laura, Mom, Mark...everyone else who comes to see me..you guys will definitely have to check it out.
